SSW 100 Index up in August: Majors down

While the major indexes were down in August, the SSW 100 Index showed a 1.3% increase from 185 to 187. The S&P 500 showed the most modest decline of 1.1% from 1,234 to 1,220 (140 to 139 on a comparable index basis), while in an unusual occurrence the Dow and the NASDAQ moved down at the same rate of 1.5%. The Dow dropped from 10,641 to 10,482 (128 to 126 on a comparable index basis) and the NASDAQ dropped from 2,185 to 2,152 (164 to 161 on a comparable index basis).

Decliners outpaced gainers by 54 to 45 with one even for the month. Overall the gainers posted stronger gains to move the index up even though they were outnumbered by the decliners. In another anomaly, both the gainers and decliners had thirteen that moved by more than 10%.

    LaserCard up 51% to $9.58
    Checkpoint Systems up 26% to $21.85
    TRC Companies up 26% to $15.00
    ScanSoft up 20% to $4.93
    Nuance Communications up 16% to $5.56
    Clean Harbors up 14% to $27.88
    CyberGuard up 14% to $8.30
    Brinks up 11% to $40.18
    SPSS up 11% to $21.80
    The Shaw Group up 10% to $21.10
    ISIS Pharmaceuticals up 10% to $5.09 

The major decliners were:

    Viisage Technology down 20% to $4.32
    VeriSign down 17% to $21.80
    IntelliCheck down 17% to $4.17
    Duratek down 16% to $20.97
    Cepheid down 13% to $7.50
    Atmel down 12% to $2.06
    SCM Microsystems down 12% to $2.73
    Applied Signal Technology down 12% to $19.09
    Hollis-Eden Pharmaceuticals down 12% to $7.99
    Tumbleweed Communications down 12% to $3.30
    Headwaters down 10% to $38.50
    SRA International down 10% to $33.57
