100 Index Up While Majors Dropped Sharply in February


The SSW 100 Index rose 1.9% in January from 218 to 222, slightly trailing the NASDAQ which moved up 2% from 2,415 to 2,464 (181 to 184 on a comparable index basis). Both were up much more than the S&P 500 and Dow. The S&P 500 gained 1.4% from 1,418 to 1,438 (161 to 163 on a comparable index basis), while the Dow was slightly behind going up 1.3% from 12,463 to 12,622 (149 to 151 on a comparable index basis).


Gainers held a one and a half margin pacing decliners by 60 to 40. Sixteen issues were up by more than 10% with eight of them posting gains of more than 15%. Only five declining issues dropped by more than 10%.

Up by more than 15% were:

    Tumbleweed Communications Corp. (TMWD) up 22% to $3.21
    Chemtura Corporation (CEM) up 20% to $11.52
    T R C COS INC (TRR) up 20% to $10.32
    CompuDyne Corp. (CDCY) up 19% to $7.82
    Deluxe Corp. (DLX) up 19% to $29.92
    CyberSource Corp. (CYBS)up 17% to $12.90
    Novell Inc. (NOVL) up 17% to $7.25
    Geo Group Inc. (GEO) up 17% to $43.82

Dropping by more than 10% were:

    Wireless Facilities Inc. (WFII) down 18% to $2.35
    CACI International Inc. (CAI) down 17% to $47.03
    Allied Defense Group Inc. (ADG) down 16% to $17.80
    Symantec Corp. (SYMC) down 15% to $17.71
    Aladdin Knowledge Systems Ltd. (ALDN) down 12% to $17.15
