100 Index Up While Majors Dropped Sharply in February

While the majors hit a sharp downturn at the end February, the SSW 100 Index significantly outperformed them by actually increasing 1.7% from 222 to 226. The sharp declines dropped the Dow 2.8% from 12,622 to 12,269 (151 to 147 on a comparable index basis), the S&P 500 2.2% from 1,438 to 1,407 (163 to 160 on a comparable index basis), and the NASDAQ 1.9% from 2.464 to 2416 (184 to 181 on a comparable index basis).

For the second month in a row gainers held a virtual one and a half margin pacing decliners by 58 to 40 with 2 even. Thirteen gainers rose by more than 10% with seven posting gains of more than 15%. There were seven decliners that fell by more than 10%.

Up by more than 15% were:

Secure Computing Corp. (SCUR) up 29% to $8.58
Nuance Communications, Inc. (NUAN) up 22% to $14.09
Bruker BioSciences Corp. (BRKR) up 21% to $9.01
Evergreen Solar Inc. (ESLR) up 18% to $9.90
Orbital Sciences Corp. (ORB) up 16% to $19.78
Magal Security Systems Ltd. (MAGS) up 16% to $10.81

Dropping by more than 10% were:

Allied Defense Group Inc. (ADG) down 32% to $12.06
Applied Digital Solutions Inc. (ADSX) down 19% to $1.62
Napco Security Systems Inc. (NSSC) down 14% to $5.16
ISIS Pharmaceuticals Inc. (ISIS) down 12% to $9.12
RAE Systems Inc. (RAE) down 12% to $3.21
Applera Corp-Applied Biosystems Group (ABI) down 11% to $30.85
Waste Management, Inc. (WMI) down 10% to $34.05
