SSW 100 Index Up Sharply in August


The SSW 100 Index was up sharply in August rising 3.6% from 229 to 236. It almost doubled the NASDAQ increase and about tripled the increases in the S&P 500 and the Dow. The NASDAQ was up 2% from 2,546 to 2,596 (191 to 194 on a comparable index basis), followed by the S&P 500, up 1.3% from 1,455 to 1,474 (165 to 168 on a comparable index basis). Bringing up the rear, the Dow was up 1.1% from 13,212 to 13,358 (158 to 160 on a comparable index basis).

Gainers outpaced decliners by a three to one margin, 65 to 33 with two even. An astounding twenty-three stocks rose by more than 10%. Nine of them posted gains over 20%. Nine stocks declined by more than 10%, of which four were down by more than 15%.

Posting better than 20% gains were:

    Cubic Corp. (CUB) up 44% to $39.53
    Trend Micro Inc. (TMICY.PK) up 33% to $41.30
    American Science & Engineering Inc. (ASEI) up 30% to $72.25
    EDO Corporation (EDO) up 30% to $43.04
    CompuDyne Corp. (CDCY) up 29% to $6.87
    Cepheid (CPHD) up 27% to $18.68
    Checkfree Corp. (CKFR) up 25% to $46.23
    Calgon Carbon Corp. (CCC) up 21% to $13.35
    Checkpoint Systems Inc. (CKP) up 21% to $27.85

Off by more than 15% were:

    Allied Defense Group Inc. (ADG) down 28% to $4.50
    Entrust Inc. (ENTU) down 22% to $2.20
    AVANT Immunotherapeutics Inc. (AVAN) down 19% to $0.53
    Verint Systems Inc. (VRNT.PK) down 19% to $24.
