100 Index Jumps 4.6% in October


The SSW 100 Index jumped 4.6% in October from 245 to 256. It far outpaced two of the majors, but not the NASDAQ, which posted an outstanding 5.8% gain moving from 2,702 to 2859 (202 to 214 on a comparable index basis) The S&P 500 rose a modest 1.4% from 1,527 to 1,549 (174 to 176 on a comparable index basis). The Dow stagnated at a 0.2% increase moving from 13,896 to 13,930 (which didn’t register on a comparable index basis as both months show 167).

Gainers led decliners by a two to one margin, 67 versus 33. Gainers were particularly strong with twenty-six issues posting better than 10% increases. And nine of those jumped more than 20%. On the downside five declined by more than 10%

Up more than 20% were:

    Mercury Computer Systems Inc. (MRCY) up 52% to $15.64
    CyberSource Corp. (CYBS) up 40% to $16.35
    First Solar, Inc. (FSLR) up 35% to $158.81
    Evergreen Solar Inc. (ESLR) up 29% to $11.56
    Shaw Group Inc. (SGR) up 28% to $74.60
    Hollis-Eden Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (HEPH) up 28% to $2.52
    Strategic Diagnostics Inc. (SDIX) up 25% to $6.40
    FLIR Systems Inc. (FLIR) up 25% to $69.39
    Sybase, Inc. (SY) up 24% to $28.60

Off by more than 10% were:

    EFJ Inc. (EFJI) down 43% to $3.28
    Smith & Wesson Holding Corp. (SWHC) down 37% to $12.09
    Tumbleweed Communications Corp. (TMWD) down 20% to $1.73
    LaserCard Corporation (LCRD) down 14% to $9.58
    Analogic Corporation (ALOG) down 10% to $57.15
